The dutiful music searcher should know when to drop the aural binoculars he uses to scan faraway landscapes looking for the coolest music, and be capable of listening to special tunes that are popping up close to his ears. Paraphrasing – and adapting a bit -- Bob Dylan, it would be a case of: 'why wait any longer for the songs you like / when they're being played / in front of you?'
Michael Araneo, and the music he plays is indeed special. First, because it operates on a saturated niche, which is melodic-tonal pop-rock, and still keeps integrity and personality. Secondly, because the lyrics are unmistakably straightforward, without sinking hopelessly in embarrassing common places. Thirdly, because he manages to assemble together, with dexterity and productive superficiality, influences from different genres, without overloading the songs.
Having said, expect to find in his release a fine compilation of songs, which might make you recollect Josh Rouse – but not that mellow –, Ray LaMontaigne – but not that depressing –, American Music Club – but not that bitter – or Lloyd Cole – but not that over-polished – and therefore make you think that it's not that easy to pigeonhole Michael's music.
This can only be a good sign.
